Lee Foss:
Since childhood Lee has been drawn to music with a soulful feel and a distinct uptempo rythm. It was a late 80's/early 90's fascination with new jack swing, hip hop, and R+B that peaked his interest in music and gave him an ear for the soulful that still exists today in his house production and track selection. A long time music collector and part time dj, his interests spread to soul, disco, house and funk. After spending the better part of 3 years in Ibiza Spain, Lee had the opportunity to DJ as far afield as Germany the UK and around Ibiza, and came away with a distinctly electronic take on soulful music. Since returning to Chicago in 2004 Lee has rapidly become one of Chicago's busiest, and most forward thinking djs, and plays a distinct mix of soulful techno, 80's funk/boogie, electro/tech/deep house, and minimal funk. Due to his eleclectic styles, he is most promoters and venues choice to open up for the truly cutting edge and distinct artists. He has played alongside luminaries such as Norman Jay MBE, Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area), Dixon (Sonar Kollective), Halo, Diz, Lee Burridge, Miles Maeda, Mazi, Traxx, Dan Berkson, Lusine, Jamie Jones, Chris Liebing, Johnny Fiasco, The Crystal Method, and Alexi Delano just to name a few.In addition to several residencies around town, he is consistently booked at major clubs like Smartbar, Zentra, Soundbar, Vision, Green Dolphin Street, Four, Redno5, Wet, The Works (Detroit), as well as cutting edge music based lounges like Sonotheque, Darkroom, Tini Martini, and Bungalow. Not one to shy away from cutting edge corporate events, Lee has taken on gigs for major clients like Moet/Hennesey, The Shedd Aquarium, and RJ Reynolds.Spring 2006 sees the launch of Discrete Music as a brand/promotion group/label. With a series of loft/warehouse parties and a series of disco based club nights, the future looks bright for the collective and for Lee.You should definitely expect rare 80's missing link disco, shades of Detroit and Chicago roots, and enough electronic funk to shake a stick at!

Spencer Lokken:
A beat nut since the very beginning, Spencer would be lost without the guidance of sound. A classically trained violinist since three, after schooling at the University of Wisconsin-Madison he put off professional performance for a nine to five position in the music biz while maintaining a consistent string of DJ gigs around the Midwest. Along with locals Ben Silver and Bethany Briscoe, Spencer formed the Orchard Lounge, a DJ collective of friends and music lovers devoted to exposing the masses to a wide array of headnodic jams. Music designed to be bumped anywhere from the dance floor to the couch, the three specialize in downtempo and your off the beaten path house, but keep things fresh by incorporating classic hip hop, electro, and funk into their sets. Never one to take things too seriously, the decade of party rocking experience has enabled Lokken to thoroughly understand his duty as a DJ.

All Natural Inc. & Stones Throw presents“Dance to the Drummer’s dB “(Producers Showcase)&“Exodus into Unheard Rhythms”(Listening Party)

Doors @ 9 / 21+ / free before 10PM & $5 after 10PM
Hosted by Iomos Marad
Music by: Sean Doe & Tone BShowcase @ 11:30(Early arrival recommended)

Dance to the Drummer’s dB”: Featuring producers:Chill, Silence (Outerlimitz), & Maker (Glue)Plus special guests Oh No, Illmind & Roc C

Illmind has produced for 50 Cent, Common, Ghost Face, Dead Prez, & Little Brother to name a few. He recently released a new record w/ The Pacific entitled “The Case”.Oh No “Exodus into Unheard Rhythms” instores Aug. 8thRoc C recently released “All Questions Answered" features production by Oxnard family: Oh No, DJ Romes and Kan Kick. The diverse list of guest MCs includes Oh No, Dudley Perkins, Pok Dogg, Glasses Malone, J Ro, Chino XL, Bizzy Bone and Aloe Blacc.Listening Party 9:30 – 11:00“Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms”Sampling the music of Galt MacDermot.Featuring MCs: A.G., Posdnuos, Murs, Cali Agents, Wise Intelligent, Buckshot, K Jay, Roc C, Aloe Blacc, Wordsworth, LMNO, Vast Aire, MED, Wildchild, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Frank N Dank, and Fergus MacRoyIt was around the age of 11 when making beats won out over video games to become Oh No’s most obsessive pastime. Over the years, as the Cali-bred b-boy honed his skills of rhyming and producing, it became obvious that – like his brother Madlib (iconic hip-hop maestro), his father Otis Jackson (cult ’70s soul singer) and his uncle Jon Faddis (renowned jazz trumpeter) – Oh No would go on to pursue the family business of music.Oh No debuted as a producer and MC in his own right with The Disrupt, his 2004 full-length on Stones Throw Records. With recent beat production on the albums of fellow Oxnard, CA-based MCs Wildchild, MED and new signee Roc ‘C’, Oh No has probably logged more beats on Stones Throw releases than anyone else besides Madlib. In recent years, Oh No has carved out a funky style related, but distinct, to that of his famed sibling, as magazines like XXL, The Source and URB have all attested. A landmark collaboration with jazz/funk legend David Matthews (arranger behind many of James Brown’s finest albums) at last year’s Red Bull Music Academy – where Mr. Matthews composed an orchestral piece based on a single Oh No beat – hinted at the scope of things to come from the young underground impresario. The hip-hop world can now witness Oh No’s musical vision with Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms, a unique concept album made of beats derived solely from Galt MacDermot samples. Known primarily as the composer of the late-’60s smash musical HAIR, Galt MacDermot distilled the essence of R&B rhythms and Broadway melodies into a unique and potent groove for the Age of Aquarius. After his breakthrough hits from HAIR, MacDermot perfected his sound throughout the following decades on his own imprint, Kilmarnock Records, backed by longtime collaborators, jazz/funk drumming legends Bernard Purdie and Idris Muhammad. MacDermot offered Oh No access to his huge (and still growing) catalog of music for his work on Exodus.Once he put his own sonic stamp on the composer’s inimitable material, Oh No pitched the 70-plus beats he made to the MCs in his network. A formidable cast heeded his call to lyrically bless – from veterans like De La Soul’s Posdnuos and DITC legend A.G. to current indie powerhouses like Murs and Vast Aire. Longtime Oh No comrades like LMNO, M.E.D., Aloe Blacc, Wildchild and Dudley Perkins do their parts, while appearances from Buckshot of Black Moon and Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers lend additional weight to the all-star cast. While he only touches the mic on three tracks here, Oh No’s production efforts alone prove that he is one of those musical mavericks who – like Galt – hear the unheard rhythms first, and lead the way for the rest. For more info check out AllNaturalhiphop.com & StonesThrow.com

Wake Up, Kupei and Sonotheque present:KATE SIMKO 'STRUMM EP' RECORD RELEASE PARTY
Featuring performances by:KATE SIMKO (Traum, Kupei Musika ? Chicago) - LIVEERIC CLOUTIER (Untitled, Detroit Luv, Nefarious ? Detroit)DJ SASSMOUTH (NBFC ? Chicago)Real-time Visuals: JEFFREY WEETER

Taking place every other first Tuesday at Sonotheque, the Wake Up! series showcases some of the less obvious electronic music talent from Chicago and beyond. Tonight Wake Up! hosts the Record Release Party for Kate Simko's new Strumm EP on Seattle-based Kupei Musika. The release features original tracks by Simko as well as remixes by Jonas Bering (Kompakt) and UNAI (Force Trax). Kate Simko will be performing live as part of her U.S. tour and the night features new Wake Up! resident DJ Sassmouth as well. In addition, we welcome Detroit Luv founder up-and-coming DJ Eric Cloutier. Chicago-based video artist Jeffrey Weeter will be performing real-time visuals throughout the night.

KATE SIMKO:
Kate Simko blurs the line between musical boundaries. Moving from a solid classical training to jazz, electronics and beyond, Kate?s music possesses a unique harmonic, structural and spatial depth. Moody, melodic and minimal, Kate's live techno set bridges the gap between club music and headphone listening. Kate?s first recordings ranged from experimental music concrète influenced electronic music to quiet ambient soundscapes and interpretations of some of her favorite composers, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos and Erik Satie. Growing tired of making music without beats, Kate started working with live drummers and then recorded her first electronic music record with Chilean producer Andres Bucci (as Detalles). While living in Santiago, Kate studied composition with avante garde composer Aliocha Solavera and was exposed to the endless world of Latino music. In time, Kate has moved to complete musical independence ? combining her many influences to create her own unique sound.Kate released her first album on Traum in 2003 (as Detalles with Chilean producer Andres Bucci), which led to various performances in South America, including the 2004 Mutek Chile festival. The Detalles project received great international press and URB magazine named Detalles as one of the ?Next 100? music groups to watch worldwide. Next, Kate was commissioned to create a remix for Philip Glass, which was released as part of the Glasscuts remix album on his label, Orange Mountain Music, in September 2005. This summer is an exciting time for Kate; she is busy playing tour dates for her new Strumm EP in additional to composing music for a piano-based record set to come out on Chocolate Industries.Throughout her career, Kate has received national and international press in publications such as the L.A Times, The Wire, Art Papers, Grooves Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, URB, de:Bug and XLR8R and has performed beside artists such as Monolake, Four Tet, Michael Mayer, M83, Ellen Allien, Oliver Hacke, Andreas Tilliander, Magda and Ulrich Schnauss.Site: www.katesimko.com

ERIC CLOUTIER:
In a genre and movement all too predictable with the same fifty records playing forever on a continuous loop, Eric Cloutier is quietly making himself stand out amongst Detroit's next generation of producers and DJ?s. He began on the same circuit of Detroit parties and clubs most have traveled, eventually establishing residencies at Ann Arbor's Necto and Detroit's prominent after hours party spot, The Works. He also performed at both 2004's Movement festival as well as 2006?s Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and has shared the decks with fellow Detroit DJ?s Matthew Dear, Derek Plaslaiko and Ryan Elliott. In 2005, he was handpicked as a chosen replacement for the next batch of DJ?s at Detroit's monthly "Untitled" parties. Tasteful yet mildly abrasive, his blend of minimal techno infused with dub sensibilities firmly entrenches his sound in Detroit's rich past while looking towards the future.Site: www.elementeight.net

SASSMOUTH:
Sassmouth, a classically trained party girl, sought refuge through electronic dance music in an effort to escape the bullshit of capitalism. Always on the lookout for the next serious party, Sassmouth's training brought her to all corners of the globe including regular holidays in the world's techno capital, Detroit; annual pilgrimages to the Winter Music Conference, and Ibiza's closing parties. After perfecting the art of dancing 'till sunset, Sassmouth was inspired to DJ in 2002. She began fueling bars, lounges, house parties, and morning gatherings in Chicago with her mix of techno, house and electro.Sam's love for the more minimal side of techno influenced her decision to study in Santiago, Chile in 2004, where she further developed her minimal melodic sound amongst the Chilean techno community. She eventually snagged a set at one of the top techno nights in the city at the infamous Dominica 54'-- once again rocking that friendly late morning crowd. Upon returning to Chicago in 2005, Sassmouth began organizing the biweekly techno night, Ettiket, and has continued her late night hijinks behind the decks at other Naughty Bad Fun Collective events at the west-side underground spot, Deadtech. She tag-teamed with the Punisher at "In Your System" 1 year anniversary, "3 Way Punishment" at Corktown in Detroit, and "Live Wrong" during WMC in Miami and DEMF in Detroit, and played with Surgeon at the "Big Bang Sessions", with Speedy J at Vision, with Misstress Barbara and Christian Smith at Labyrinth and Adam Beyer in Detroit, and with Magda and Mathew Dear at Smartbar, Meiotic's "Your Formula Life" party with Atomly, Popkan, and Steve Barnes, Bryan Zentz at Zentra, Justin Long and Johnny Fiasco at Soundbar, and headlined Cincinnati's techno night, "Bang". Take a disco nap, come early, and stay late to catch her punchy techno and jags into jackin' house at the NBFC's "Etikett" night every first and third Wednesday at Betty's Blue Star Lounge, and Wake Up! with fellow resident Kate Simko first Tuesdays at Sonotheque.Site: www.djsassmouth.com

JEFFREY WEETER:
Jeffrey Weeter is a composer and video artist who has worked extensively with choreographers, filmmakers, poets, playwrights and video and performance artists. Recent endeavors include the livevideo/music collaborations Fire and Ice, PowerPoint, Lavamatic and work with Virgil Moorefield and Mark Cartwright.Site: www.lavamatic.com

Biz 3 Marketing presents A-Trak and Flosstradamus

Doors open @ 9pm
$10 cover - $8 with Pitchfork ticket voucher

A-Trak:

Alain Macklovitch was 13 when he scratched his first record. The year was 1995, the turntable was his father's, and the mixer...well, he didn't have a mixer yet. But that problem was remedied soon enough, when he used his freshly earned Bar Mitzvah money to buy himself a used Technics 1200 turntable and, you guessed it, a mixer. In the months that followed, while the other kids were busy playing sports and watching Full House, he spent most of his after-school time locked up in his basement, practicing, listening to Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Jazzy Jeff records, studying videotapes and showing his new scratches to his big brother Dave.
Two years later, with nary an armpit hair in sight, the Montreal native was crowned DMC World Champion and invited to be an honorary member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, the celebrated Bay Area crew led by DJ Q-Bert and Mixmaster Mike. When that crew disbanded, he and Miami's DJ Craze joined forces as the front men of a new collective, the Allies. In the years that followed, A-Trak went on to win the 1999 & 2000 ITF World Championships, the 1999 Vestax World Extravaganza and the 2000 DMC Team Championships (with Craze). On top of being the youngest world champion, this made him the first DJ ever to win all three major titles (DMC, ITF and Vestax) and the first DJ to win five world championships. At the age of 18, Young Trizzle decided it was time to retire from battling.

A-Trak was now ready to focus more attention on Audio Research, the record label that he and Dave started in 1997. He was also ready to tour more intensely -- that is, as much as his school schedule allowed. The fresh-faced Canadian was at the forefront of a worldwide DJ movement, inspiring legions of young lads to pick up scratching, appearing on the cover of URB Magazine and in various documentaries. He performed across the world in hip hop clubs and eclectic music festivals from the New York to Norway, from Austin to Australia. While still recording with Montreal rap outfit Obscure Disorder, he collaborated with New York underground icons Non Phixion as well as indie hip hop tastemaker Peanut Butter Wolf.

In the turntablist scene, A-Trak established himself as "the DJ's DJ", building groundbreaking routines that managed to push the envelope technically while remaining appealing to the untrained ear. He developed a revolutionary notation system, which allowed him to write scores of scratch patterns and solos. And his DJ battle records quickly became cult favorites, used and abused in DJ competitions around the globe.

Earlier this summer, while performing at a London record store, A-Trak caught the ear of everybody's favorite rapper/producer, Kanye West, who quickly made him his DJ and brought him out on tour, where they performed in front of sold-out 20,000 seat stadiums for two months.

He is now getting ready to release his first major solo project, a DVD and soundtrack entitled Sunglasses Is a Must.

A-Trak is an Aries.

Check out djatrak and audioresearch for more info.

FLOSSTRADAMUS:

2 DJs, 3 turntables, and lots of people getting buck on the dancefloor. Forget what you think you know about spinning records. In 2005, DJs no longer need be characterized by n arrow labels like "hip hop," ghetto tech," or "house." Jocks can sweep across all of those genres, mash them up together, and create something wholly new--something that can't be easily pigeonholed.

Take it from Flosstradamus, the newly formed but already dynamic DJ duo comprised of Josh Young (J2K) and Curt Cameruci (Autobot). Like the emerging generation of post-millennium dancefloor crashers of the same ilk (see: Major Taylor, locally, and Diplo and Low Budget of Hollertronix nationally), Flosstradamus are more interested in getting the crowd moving--and grinding and sweating and bumping and shaking--than impressing any music elitists in the audience. They cut through genres indiscriminately, likely to play during any given half-hour: Le Tigre's "Deceptacon," Killer Mike's "My Chrome" and the Cure's "Lovesong"--perhaps sequentially, if you're lucky.

With two men, a three-turntable setup, and an impressive catalogue of sounds (Young and Cameruci use programs called Serato and Final Scratch, respectively, which allows them to transfer all of their vinyl--at least 20 crates' worth--to MP3s and treat them as records on the turntables), Flosstradamus is already packing their Wednesday night monthly at Town Hall Pub regularly...come see what all the fuss is about for yourself.

Sonotheque and Formulawerks Present "BOOMBAP"THE HIP HOP BATTLE ROYALE
C-Mass and X-Ray VS. INTEL and Pickel
With live art by Joey Potts and Revise
Doors at 9pm$5 cover

This month were presenting you a HIP HOP BATTLE ROYALE between Boombap residents C-Mass and X-Ray and Formulawerks own Intel and Pickel. The nite is sure to pleaseevery and any fan of hip hop so come early get some drinks and let these four Dj's present you with some of the best music on the best soundsystem in the city period. This ones going to be fun. INTEL Intel is on the rise. A member of the nationally recognized battle crew the PlatterPirates and rapper Pugslee Atomz's stage DJ, he recently picked up weekly residency at Zentra and is popping up as a guest DJ in spots all around the city. Popular in the B-boy community as a break-dance friendly selector, he can also weave downtempo joints into the evening. Intel, whose given name is Jason Deuchler, grew up in OakPark, where, he says, he was a typical social kid. Friendly with everybody, he did the usual things -- a little floor hockey, a little theater, some of this, some of that. But in the early 1990s, he started messing around with his brother's turntables. Before long, he'd taken the name DJ Intel, and hooked up friends Spryte and DJ Adept, who'd started a break-dance crew called Chicago Tribe. We were abunch of DJs and we just wanted to throw parties, he says. So they started having house parties in Forest Park, and that's where he learned the rush of being a DJ. Anytime you're at a party or a show, the music is what drives everything, so the DJ forces the direction of the party, he says. The whole environment is based on themusic. It's really awesome. In a way, he says, the DJ is the benevolent manipulator. It's cool to get the reaction out of it, to get on the turntable and pick a song and make someone's night or make someone's day just like that, at the spur of the moment. Soon he'd progressed to a now-defunct spot on Madison Street in Forest Park called The Playoffs. To hype their night, Intel and his friends would head downtown with Xeroxed flyers. We were always taken aback by how many people came out to Forest Park, he says. Back then, there were always a lot more smaller18-and-up shows in Chicago, so we'd make up flyers and hit all of those shows. Now it would be difficult for a similar thing to happen. The whole Anti-Rave Act really kind of shut that whole do-it-yourself vibe, Intel says. I always get calls from people who are looking for a venue to throw an all-ages jam where people can dance and break and have fun. That kind of place is almost nonexistent now unless you goto an art gallery, and that will cost you a chunk of change. After almost five years of playing clubs and parties, Intel and Spryte started the Platter Pirates, a crew that has won several turntablist competitions and now has members in California, Texas, Iowa, Colorado and Chicago. I battled a few times. But I am definitely more into the music side, says Intel. Spryte took it up and excelled --he was the International Turntablist Federation World Scratch Champion. Now, as Intel enjoys the fruits of all of his interests, he's happy to still be in Chicago. This is a place where you can bring the club thing, the scratch thing, the B-boything all together. That's totally possible. The crowds in Chicago let you play a set and incorporate all of that, and they really enjoy it.

PICKEL: Born on the first of the year in 1978, deejay pickel was well on his way to sample as much Air Supply and Christopher Cross that the Brickyard K mart would sell him.Having been introduced to hip hop in like 86 from his cousin in LA, things began to progress. While growing up on the northwest side of Chicago Pickel would also go to Long Island once a year to visit with his grandparents. His grandfather exposed him to as much ny as a boy could dream of. This would later emerge into a great love for NY's greatest export: hip-hop. He started making beats on a Gemini sampler and two fugazi-ass turntables. Sampling the Shabona Park cheerleaders chant, jump shakeyour booty, jump jump shake your booty. Eventually he would form a group with hisschool buddies entitled, "The Epitamy of Urban Youth." The group was like three kids that just saw the movie Juice and then decided to rap like MC Pooh. They would later record a demo on the Singalodeon Karaoke machine and eventually send it toMichael Bivens. That was back in like 90 it is now the year 2005. Whats up Biv? We're starving in the Chi. Later at 17, he went back to NY to visit his cousins in Queens. This was the shit. All along while coming up in chicago he would get shitfrom punk ass gansta rap wannabee ass dudes. They'd say "o, he be on that New York shit. I guess liking the new Craig Mack makes you un-Chicago? So the story goes... He heard the Wu on Hot 97's moring show with Dr. Dre and Ed Lover, instant gratification... That's fucking dope.

COOL & DEADLY DIGITAL

A night celebrating the most soulful and funky sounds from Jamaica
featuring reggae, dub and dancehall
with DJ Rikshaw

Doors open @ 10pm

DJ Rikshaw:
Chicago dancehall doesn't get the kind of exhaustive exposure that the local house and hip-hop communities do, but that doesn't mean fans of the genre are any less dedicated. Case in point: DJ Rikshaw, founder of the infamous Deadly Dragon Sound System, who has promoted reggae and dub in the city for a number of years, championed the styles long before it was fashionable to do so. Now, with this well-respected residency at Sonotheque, a loyal following of committed dancehallers turn Sunday night into one of the most unique and reliable parties in the city. Expect fractured riddims, drink specials, and surprise guest DJs.
